Fibre, sugar, sodium and saturated fat targets

Three of these four move with your budget rather than sitting at a figure for a generic adult: a bigger budget raises them, a smaller one lowers them. Sodium is the exception — it does not scale with what you eat.

Where the four rules come from

Fibre at 14 g per 1000 kcal is the form the Dietary Guidelines state it in — tied to energy rather than fixed, because the same gram figure means a different job to someone eating 1400 and someone eating 3000. Sugars and saturated fat are capped at 10% of energy each, converted at four and nine kcal per gram. Sodium is a flat 2300 mg.

The app computes these from the same calorie target it shows on the main screen, so the fibre goal cannot drift away from the budget it came from. And it reports how much of each day the number was actually computed from — below 50% coverage it declines to show a total at all, because counting a missing value as zero makes a day of packaged food look spotless.

Common questions

How much saturated fat is OK daily?

Capped at 10% of energy, converted at 9 kcal per gram — so the gram figure moves with your calorie budget instead of sitting at a number for a generic adult.

How much fibre should I eat per day?

14 g per 1000 kcal, which is the form the Dietary Guidelines state it in — tied to energy rather than fixed, because the same gram figure means a different job to someone eating 1400 and someone eating 3000.

How much sugar and sodium per day?

Sugars are capped at 10% of energy, converted at 4 kcal per gram. Sodium is the exception to all of it — a flat 2300 mg that does not scale with what you eat.

What happens if some of the day’s food has no nutrient data?

Below 50% coverage the app declines to show a total at all, because counting a missing value as zero makes a day of packaged food look spotless.

Everything you type stays in this page. There is no account, nothing is saved to your device, and no figure is sent anywhere — the arithmetic runs in your browser and is thrown away when you close the tab. The constants it uses are the ones the app runs on, published at the methodology page.
