SmartCrunch vs Cal AI

The short answer#

Cal AI’s flow is three steps: answer some questions, photograph your meal, get a breakdown. Its own App Store text notes that food scanning results require a subscription.

That photo route is the single feature SmartCrunch charges for. Everything downstream of it — the budget, the adaptive maintenance, the trend, the forecast, the micronutrients, the full history — is free here.

So the comparison comes down to a question worth asking before you pick either: what happens when the photo estimate is not enough?

When a photo is not enough#

A model looking at a plate is guessing at portion size, cooking method, and whatever is underneath. It is genuinely useful for speed and genuinely approximate. Two things follow.

You need a way to correct it. In SmartCrunch the estimate is a draft: the model proposes, you edit it before saving, and from the moment you save, the app’s own engines do all the arithmetic. It changes no computed number — the same calorie is the same calorie whether you paid or not.

You need the free routes to be good. Barcode scanning, database search, repeating yesterday and typing it in are all free and uncapped here, so a photo estimate you do not trust has somewhere to fall back to that does not cost money.

The other difference: where the daily target comes from#

Cal AI builds your plan from lifestyle questions. That is a formula over a profile — reasonable at the start, and it does not update itself because nothing in it was measured.

SmartCrunch treats a profile-based figure as the fourth rung of five, and prefers to solve your maintenance backwards from what you actually logged against where your weight actually went, with four published conditions it insists on before it will.

Where Cal AI is better#

  • Speed of onboarding. It is built to get you to a number in a minute.
  • Photo logging is the product, so it is more central and more developed there than a single feature can be here.
  • Android.

Which to choose#

Choose Cal AI if photographing meals is the only way you will ever track anything, and you want an app organised entirely around that.

Choose SmartCrunch if you want the photo route as one option among four, the other three free, and a daily number that is derived from your own weeks rather than from an onboarding questionnaire.
