The short answer#
Foodvisor is a well-made photo-first tracker — App Store Editors’ Choice, around 15 million users, four logging routes (photo, voice, text, barcode) and a deliberate focus on building habits rather than restricting.
It is better than us at getting food into a diary quickly. Three of its four routes are free there; two of them are our paid tier.
We are aimed at a different part of the problem: not how fast food goes in, but whether the number that comes out is defensible.
The claim worth reading carefully#
Foodvisor’s listing states an average loss figure for its users over three months. Averages like that are worth reading with the usual caution — they describe the people who kept using the app, which is not the same as the people who downloaded it, and no app can control what its users do.
SmartCrunch makes no outcome claim at all, anywhere. Not on the site, not in the App Store listing, not in the app. That is a deliberate constraint rather than modesty: we cannot know, so we do not say. It is also why this site talks about arithmetic and refusals rather than results.
Where Foodvisor is better#
- Logging speed and breadth — photo, voice and text all in the free-to-try product.
- Habit and coaching framing, which is a genuine product and not one we have.
- Android and web.
- Recipes and food guidance.
Where SmartCrunch differs#
- The daily number is derived from your own weeks, not from an onboarding form, with every threshold published and a refusal when the data cannot support an answer.
- The engine is free — budget, adaptive maintenance, trend, forecast, scanner, search, full history, no caps. The paid tier is one feature and it changes no computed number.
- No account, no analytics, no advertising. The diary stays on the phone.
- No outcome promises.
- Gaps reported as gaps — coverage beside every micronutrient total, and no total below half.

Which to choose#
Choose Foodvisor if the barrier is logging at all, and a fast, encouraging app is what gets you to do it.
Choose SmartCrunch if you already log, and what you want is a number you can check — with the method, the thresholds and the refusals written down.
Claims about Foodvisor were checked against its public pages on and are not warranted to stay current — prices and features change without notice, and the vendor's own site is authoritative.
