SmartCrunch vs Simple

The short answer#

These two apps disagree about the premise, which makes this the least apples-to-apples comparison on the site.

Simple’s own description says it helps you lose weight “without calorie counting or extreme restrictions”. It is an AI coach — personalised plans, on-demand coaching, photo-based food feedback, workouts, and an explicitly motivational, game-like experience.

SmartCrunch is calorie counting, done as carefully as we know how, with no coach, no encouragement and no plan.

If being counted-on and nudged is what makes you stick with something, we are the wrong app and this page is not going to argue otherwise.

Where Simple is better#

  • Accountability and coaching. An in-app coach that responds to you. We have nothing of the kind and never will.
  • Not requiring you to count. For a lot of people that is the difference between using an app and abandoning one.
  • Instant photo feedback on meals, groceries and menus — guidance rather than numbers.
  • Workouts and a broader wellness scope.

Where SmartCrunch differs#

  • It produces a number, and tells you where the number came from. Five ranked sources, the top one solved from your own logged weeks, and the app names which one it used.
  • It refuses when it cannot support an answer, rather than encouraging you through the gap.
  • The engine is free — budget, diary, scanner, goal, trend, history, no daily caps. The paid tier is one convenience.
  • No account, no coach, no streaks, no notifications designed to bring you back.
  • A published floor. The budget is clamped at 1200 kcal and the app says when it has refused part of a deficit you asked for.

Which to choose#

Choose Simple if the problem you are solving is motivation, consistency or dread of counting. That is a real problem and counting does not solve it.

Choose SmartCrunch if you are willing to count and want the number to be right — derived from your own data, with the method published and the refusals visible.

Claims about Simple were checked against its public pages on and are not warranted to stay current — prices and features change without notice, and the vendor's own site is authoritative.
